FIDIC’s 2021 Global Infrastructure Conference was hosted virtually on September 10 and 13. The theme of the conference this year — “Investing in Future Infrastructure: Governance & Leadership in a Post-Pandemic World” — gave speakers a platform to discuss the planning, funding and delivery of sustainable infrastructure in a world changed by the COVID-19 crisis.

On the second day of the conference, BST Global Chief Executive Officer Javier A. Baldor participated on a panel during the “Finance Forum” session. To kick off the discussion, Javier summarized some of the industry’s KPIs that firms are struggling to impact such as revenue leakage, utilization rates and profitability. He stressed that, to move the needle in these areas, we need to embrace data technologies and apply project intelligence™.

“I believe in the notion of the data-driven consultancy of the future. When delivered in a simple-to-understand, consumer-grade experience, big data, AI, machine learning, intelligent automation and anomaly detection can unlock the efficiencies and predictive capabilities that enable project managers and teams to better manage their projects and ultimately impact profitability.” – Javier A. Baldor, CEO, BST Global

Later in the discussion, focus turned to people management and the importance of maintaining a positive, constructive employee experience. Javier noted that “people optimization” goes beyond scheduling work and employee availability; it means considering employee interests and team dynamics. Incorporating these values into project scheduling decisions helps managers identify and engage the most effective combination of employees for each unique project. Additionally, it improves team morale and the overall employee experience as team members have more opportunity to work on projects that interest them with people who complement their skillsets and work style.

“Now, with the shift to more remote work, they’re going to gravitate to the best experience. ‘Where can I progress as an individual? Where can I develop my skills? Where can I live my passion?’ Having those modern tools to help employees develop their skills and work in their areas of interest will set companies apart and attract this workforce.” – Javier A. Baldor, CEO, BST Global

Javier and other members of the panel see an opportunity for emerging data technologies to help enable the best possible employee experience, which will ultimately move the needle in areas of utilization and profitability for the firms that engage them.
